Coachella Valley Preserve Trails
Please keep in mind that we are always working to improve our signage, but some trails are better marked than others.
All distances indicated below are from the Visitors’ Center.
PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS. WE ARE A WILDLIFE REFUGE AND WOULD ASK THAT YOU LEAVE THE OPEN DESERT FOR THE PLANTS AND ANIMALS THAT CALL THIS DESERT HOME.
Our most popular and family friendly trail is the McCallum Trail. This is about 2-miles round trip. Start from the Visitors’ Center and head through the first oasis and return.
If walking is difficult, you don’t have time, or you visit when it is too hot to hike, do our simple Smoke Tree Ranch Trail. This trail loops around the main oasis for as much as 1/2 mile, or less if you choose.
If you want to add on an additional route to your McCallum walk, take Moon Country from Simone Pond. Moon Country Loop adds an additional 2 miles to your hike. You can add Moon Country Canyon but remember this is a dead end canyon that goes partway up into the Indio Hills. This will add 1 – 2 miles to your hike.
Be sure to visit Vista Point whether you just do the McCallum Trail, or take the Moon Country Loop. It only adds 500 hundred yards to your McCallum walk.
Willis Palms Loop starts from the trailhead close to Ramon Road. This is about 4.3 miles and connects with Herman’s Hike. Take a side track onto Herman’s to the highest point on the Preserve and fantastic views of the valley and Mt. San Jacinto. A side track will add about 1.6 miles to your hike.
The trail for Hidden Palms, Horseshoe Palms, Pushawalla and Indian Palms starts on the southeast side of the parking lot and crosses Thousand Palms Canyon Road. (There is a separate trailhead on the east side of the road for these trails as well.) Horseshoe Palms is about 5 miles. Hidden Palms Loop is about 5 miles. Pushawalla Loop is about 3.5 miles. Indian Palms is about 1.2 mile round trip.
The full Herman’s Hike Loop is the longest and most difficult of our trails. To take this loop you will start at either the Willis Palm’s Loop or the Thousand Palms Oasis. If you start at Willis Palms take Willis Palms Trail to Herman’s Hike. From there go over the Indio Hills to Moon Country. Follow Moon Country to McCallum which will take you to the Thousand Palms Oasis. From here cross the road (take care, please!) to follow the Hidden Palms Loop at the base of the hills back to Willis Palms.
